an exquisite take on a teenager's first crush.
North Sea Texas by Bavo Defurne
Official Synopsis:-

Pim lives in a small town on the Belgian coast, together with his single mother Yvette; a local accordion starlet. It's an ordinary existence which Pim brightens up by dreaming of princesses, beauty queens and handsome Gino; the boy next door. But when hunky traveller Zoltan blows through town, Pim's life takes an unexpected turn.

Dave Says:-

Captivating you with the coming-of-age tale of a young boy whose dreams of beauty queens are soon to turn to adolescent yearnings for the boy (almost) next door, here Bavo Defurne of Campfire fame makes his long awaited celluloid return and as expected, he does not disappoint.
North Sea Texas by Bavo Defurne
For this is the touching story of the highs and lows of a teenager's first crush, that of an emotional roller coaster ride showcasing a young man who at no point questions his emerging homosexuality, having turned away from the longing looks of the object of his desire's younger sister; instead opting for telling eye movements that define the true nature of his heart.

It is a work in which all play their parts wonderfully, with newcomer Jelle Florizoone delightful in the lead role and not only when cast opposite Mathias Vergels as Gino, but achingly realistic when both mother / Eva Van der Gucht and son jointly come to yearn for the sexually ambiguous charms of fairground worker Zoltan.

Spanning the years with ease, Defurne's ever keen attention to light and shade is evident throughout, walking hand in hand with his trademark themes of the heavens and the earth below, as stunning sequences of windswept beaches mix with the beauty of the countryside, as lover boy Gino takes Pim out on his motorbike and for more than just the fresh air. But whilst the story is dreamlike at times, it is not a fairytale, as Defurne keeps his film grounded, to the point that you begin to wonder - just how many knocks can this boy take? Yes, the scenario is bittersweet, as joyous highs juxtapose with life's heartaches, but it is a narrative that Defurne, alongside co-writer Yves Verbraeken, intercuts with a series of beautifully tender moments between the two young men and in particular a heart-warming scene featuring Katelijne Damen as Pim's "second mother" Marcella. As assured, as it is compelling, Defurne's debut feature is simply exquisite.
