a short film by Satya Dusaugey.

2016 | 25 mins | France.

an hilarious example of coming out; screwball style.

Dave says:

When it comes to screwball comedies, it fair to say that few countries do them as well as the French do and this short film from co-writer, director and star of the show Satya Dusaugey of The Middle of a Lake fame, is an hilarious example of the genre.

For here Dusaugey casts himself as hapless builder Michel, who incensed by a comment from co-worker and best friend Thierry (Karim Saidi) that he could be gay opts to come out to his girlfriend Charlotte (Caroline Anglade), only to find that she's as unconvinced that he's gay, as he is. So what's a seemingly straight man to do to prove he's gay?

And answers on a postcard to that question! But surely the first option is to - get a boyfriend. Yet here, could it be to get a mousetrap instead, given straight or not, Michel is as scared of mice as they come and certainly the one that's getting free board and lodgings in his apartment. It's a neat subplot that comes full circle, even more so if you stay for the closing scene after the end credits have rolled.

In short and unlike many a work that prides itself on being a comedy, only in reality has few laughs to be had, this short thankfully does what it says on the cinematic box, delivering a series of highly amusing comical turns along the way, many of which are played deadpan style to great effect. Well staged and shot throughout and with Dusaugey certainly not shy when it comes to revealing all to the camera, frankly this is one of those short films that I would have liked to have seen more of, playing as-it-does like the opening reel of a feature. A pure delight.
