a short film by Daniel Hagberg.

2013 | 29 mins | Sweden.

an achingly realistic depiction of to thy ownself, being true.

Dave says:

From co-writer and director Daniel Hagberg comes this captivating study of two men forced to confront their very sexuality.

For students Erik (Oscar Sperlich) and Anthony (Henrik Gustavsson) are officially straight to the world, complete with girlfriends. Yet when a night of off-screen alcohol-infused passion leaves them with more questions, than answers, Anthony finds himself accepting the fact that he's no longer who he thought he was, only for Erik to cling to his heterosexual façade, refusing to hear his homosexual voice. Only for how much longer can he continue to ignore the true calling of his heart?

For that's the question that haunts this compelling short film, as the raw emotions of to thy ownself, being true, are played out right before you. And it's those naked emotions that the title is indicative of, with both Sperlich and Gustavsson delivering achingly realistic turns of two men who seemingly overnight face not only coming out to themselves, but contemplating how to come out to those they hold most dear.

Played like the start of a feature, frankly I wanted to see more, given the pairs' sheer passion for each other can only but leave you with the feeling that their night together was just the start of something far more meaningful. Simply wondrous.
