a short film by Rebecca Emcken.

the emotional impact of loneliness on the mind and body.

Dave says:

From writer and director Rebecca Emcken comes this riveting short film on the emotional impact of loneliness on the mind and body.

For Tobias (Lasse Steen) is one troubled teen; a likeable if somewhat confused young man with a talent for drawing, only to end up in a psychiatric hospital, where he's been told in no uncertain terms to make friends for his own good. And as luck would have it, he's soon to catch sight of Emil (Lior Cohen); a hunky fellow inmate who makes it his business to be Tobias' newfound best friend, ever protective of his man, along the way making sure that no one comes between them as friends and perhaps more. Only as the two get ever closer, the reality of Tobias' illness becomes all too apparent.

Wonderfully acted by the Cohen / Steen boys who play this work like a two-man play, this engrossing drama draws you in as the story builds upon the friendship of two young men who are doing their best to survive in an institutionalized environment. Along the way, Emcken crosscuts the narrative with a series of homoerotic overtones, even if Tobias' sexuality remains largely undefined. That the two act as a loving pair, seemingly always together is at the core of the story, one that culminates in its twist in the tale styled close-of-play, that is but a heartfelt plea for help for those caught in a state of emotional turmoil and confusion. Say no more.
