a short film by Jill Riley.

2016 | 8 mins | Canada.

the telling tale of closeted homosexuality disguised as overt masculinity.

Dave says:

Directed with a keen sense of poignancy by Jill Riley, this moving short film tells the story of three thirty-something best friends; Dylan (Kristopher Turner), Carter (Steven Pigozzo) and openly gay Scott (Steven Yaffee) who reunite to reminisce about times past, in the process breaking into their old private school of yesteryear, armed with a bottle of whiskey and memories that they would prefer not to remember.

Penned by co-producer Andrew Musselman, this is but an achingly vivid depiction of homophobic bullying, as the narrative cuts between past and present time frames, as flashbacks of the schools' three so-called 'golden boys' reveal how they took delight in making the life of gay boy Daniel (André Dae Kim), a living hell; only for all three to have closeted thoughts of their own and one, in particular.

Beautifully played throughout by both the cast of young and more mature players, who together deliver the natural camaraderie of best friends, this is a work that opens with a series of comical touches, as the three boys, now men, relive the juvenile antics of their youth, only for the picture to darken, as the reason for their reunion becomes apparent. It's a telling tale that shines the spotlight on closeted homosexuality disguised as overt masculinity and how homophobic bullying of the past for some, cannot be so easily forgotten, even if you cannot help but feel that a page of the screenplay is missing, as the narrative avoids answering the troubling question that you're left with come close-of-play. Only to say more, would be - spoilers.
