Produced with the support of The Ministry of Culture and Sport and The Israeli Film Council, this sexually explicit short goes a long way to illustrating how Israelis and Palestinians can live happily side-by-side each other, if perhaps only in matters relating to sex.
Written, directed and starring Omri Loukas, it follows the life of eighteen-year-old Yonatan (Loukas) who's gone AWOL from the army in the hope of a reconciliation with his ex-boyfriend, only to find himself rejected and seemingly alone in Tel Aviv without a bed for the night. Determined to find shelter - somewhere, he ends up, courtesy of an online hook-up, at the apartment of forty-year-old Sam aka Sa'id (Sasson Betzalel); a Palestinian Arab who's in the middle of hosting a sex party that wouldn't be out of place on a film set run by Chi Chi LaRue. Initially reluctant to join in a night of hedonistic delights that he's never experienced before, Yonatan changes his mind when he finds himself alone with Sa'id. Only can you trust a man who practices unsafe sex under the guise of being undetectable HIV?
Raising more questions than what it answers, this telling work is but an explicit depiction of life at the end of lonely street, as we find Yonatan as poignantly played by Loukas, longing for human companionship - that of a tender embrace, only to find himself the fresh meat in an orgy of unprotected sex 'n' drugs. And here your heart goes out to Yonatan, with his attempts to return home met with a mother more concerned with the latest fashions than the plight of her son and an ex-lover all too happy to remain - the ex.
It's a sorry tale that's been told many times before, that of the search for friendship over sex, only for sex to come easy and true friendship often as difficult to find as a winning lottery ticket. Well-shot throughout with little left to the sexual imagination, Loukas laces his work with many a pertinent line, including the comment that "you cannot be a Palestinian in Israel and not know Hebrew" making for a short film that not only speaks of a young man's heartfelt search for love and friendship, but of the ever troubling times in the Middle East. Frankly, need more be said?
