There's a lush natural feel to this short film from writer and director Alexandra Litén; no surprise really given the cast comprised of friends helping out on her first and pre film school, work.
Yet this is not an amateur piece, filmed professionally with the now discontinued Canon XL1 standard definition video camera in 2007, it tells the story of brother and sister Johan (Pär Kunze) and Julie (Moa Horgren) who alongside her best friend and perhaps more Anton (Petter Nyherg) spend a hot summer day swimming at a nearby lake, before heading off to spend the evening at a party with friends; drinking the night away. Only Johan is far from a carefree spirit. Hardly saying a word to anyone and deep in thought, this is a man who has found himself falling in love with his sister's boyfriend; namely a man who likewise finds himself taking more than a casual glance in Johan's direction. Clearly struggling to come to terms with their feelings for each other, it isn't long before one beer too many finds the two men forced to confront their innermost desires.
Wonderfully showcasing the beauty of the Swedish countryside, together with the delights of relaxing on a jetty by a lake, this coming-of-age piece has a lot going for it, in spite of the at times out-of-focus cinematography. And whilst it doesn't exactly say "it's okay to be gay" on the box, there's equally no denying that it achingly depicts the at times painful process of coming to terms with your sexuality being different to those around you; a message that whilst said many times before, frankly cannot be said loud enough.
