a short film by Jerry Carlsson.

2011 | 5 mins | Sweden.

the emotive complexities of coming out to those you love.

Dave says:

There's something quite endearing about this short film from writer and director Jerry Carlsson. It tells the heartfelt story of coming out to those you love, as teenage Joal (Charlie Gustafsson) has made up his mind, or so he thinks, to come out to his parents and tell them today that he's gay. Only is this the right moment to do so?

To that end, Gustafsson is wonderfully natural in the role of a young man wanting to finally say it like it is, his facial expressions mirroring his inner most thoughts, as the narrative in just five minutes achingly summarizes the emotive complexities of coming out to those you love; that of seemingly lying to yourself and to those around you, by not being your true self and yet at the same time yearning to let your rainbow coloured heart run free, only to question what their reaction will be to news of gay blood in the family? Indeed, perhaps they've already guessed, but are themselves wondering just when is the best moment to raise the issue with you? Then again, perhaps today is not the best time to tell them; perhaps next week, or the week after in an endless cycle of putting off saying those two life changing words - I'm gay.

Told by way of a voice-over that poignantly captures the feelings of a young man at the "will he OR won't he" come out stage of his life, Carlsson notably keeps the camera firmly on his subject, his parents almost off-screen whilst being on-screen, as the tension builds up to the moment when before he can change his mind, before he has time to think it all over again, Joal finally has the courage to just say it, like it is. Or does he? For without a sequel, we'll never truly know. But then that was never the point, as the raison d'être here was to showcase the deep-rooted fears and anxieties of coming to terms with ones sexuality being different to those around you and of letting those you hold most dear, know. And this short film does so both succinctly and beautifully. Need more be said?
