When professional photographer Alessandro (Arlindo Bezerra) catches sight of talented musician Greg (Pedro Fasanaro) playing his harmonica at a local jazz festival, it's love at first sight. Taking endless shots of the object of his affection, it's obvious to everyone that Alessandro has fallen big time for the young man who has music running through his veins. Yet if music be the food of love, then how long will the beat keep on playing?
Written and directed by Henrique Arruda, that is but a bittersweet ode to love found and ultimately lost. For not everything here is as sweet as it first appears, given Arruda opts to divide his short chapter fashion, one that in keeping with the musical theme of the piece is told by way of chapters that range from jazz to folk and from blues to pop. It's an apt theme that plays out from the opening scene of the two men starring at each other in bed to showcase, flashback fashion, how they first met to that of their last day together, courtesy of Alessandro having discovered that the love of his life is moving on, by way of having been awarded a scholarship to study music for two years in New Orleans.
To that end, both Bezerra and Fasanaro play their differing roles beautifully, along the way creating a vivid sense of togetherness that only a couple can share. Yet such bliss is not to last and here Arruda employs a series of creative techniques, from monochrome film to home-movie styled cinematography, to detail the various segments of his work. The result is a wonderfully poetic piece that plays on its title, given and as so many classic ballads are indicative of, why do so many musicians only write about love, after it ends? Say no more.
