Dave says: Filmed with the involvement of the Ese'Eja community in Palma Real, Peru by writer and direction Quentin Lazzarotto, this simple but hugely engaging short film reflects his quest to shine the cinematic spotlight on the indigenous inhabitants of the Peruvian Amazonian jungle. It tells the story of Carlito (Carlito Tirira Meshi); a young man who as the title implies has made the decision to leave his native community to embrace the modern world. Touchingly saying a final farewell to his grandmother, knowing that the two will most likely never see each other again, she nonetheless acknowledges the fact that their village is not the place for people who - are different. Stealing a motorized canoe to travel along the south eastern Madre de Dios / Mother of God region of Peru; namely the noted tributary of the Peruvian Amazon Basin, the reason for his departure soon becomes apparent in the loving embrace of his boyfriend and their future together. Told almost without a single word being spoken, apart that is from one heartfelt line delivered by the grandmother, this deeply moving work is sadly all but over before you know it. And frankly that's a shame, for what is seen plays like a documentary, being intercut with the breathtaking scenery of the Amazon rainforest, whilst equally reflecting on a part of life that showcases the reality for all too many gay men and women living in a community devoid of the rainbow openness of modern-day life and faced with the actuality of having to say goodbye to your very family itself, to say hello to love.
