a short film by Jerell Rosales.

2018 | 20 mins | US.

a wondrous take on a young boy's first crush.

Dave says:

Sweet and tender is the name of the game in this wondrous take on a young boy's first crush, from writer and director Jerell Rosales.

It tells the story of eight-year-old Zander (Zackary Arthur) who develops an infatuation on his third-grade English teacher Mr. Wiley (Jason Heymann), only to be forever thwarted from getting close to him by way of the unwanted attention of Reagan (Samantha Krull); namely the girl who has chosen Zander to be her boyfriend, whether he wants to or not. Undeterred, Zander is set to go to extreme lengths to get some private time with - his man.

Played with a natural charm by Zackary Arthur, this is but a deeply touching exploration of a young boy who regardless of the sexual pigeon-holes of society, simply follows the direction his heart is telling him. Yet it's also a short film that shines the narrative on the bond between a father and son and that of parental love, all but missing by way of the demands of life; of work. To that end, Timothy Ryan Cole is wonderful in the role of the father, never overstating his part, so as to leave the spotlight firmly on Arthur. Overly sentimental; perhaps and in particular during the pivotal scene that cannot help but leave you with a tear in your eye, this heart-warming story is nevertheless beautifully told and the fact that it's played through the innocent eyes of a child, makes it all the more endearing. A pure delight.
