There's some beautifully tender moments to be found in this touching short film from co-writer and director Fuoco Maria Balduzzi, one that tells the story of a sixteen-year-old Josh (Roly Botha); a young man socially distanced from his father ever since his mother left the family home. With his father Robert (Ryan Davies) trying to, but failing to connect with his son; this is the picture of a talented teenager with a gift for drawing all but alone in the world. That is, until he chances upon an almost naked stranger in the nearby woods where he lives.
Offering the youth who would later go by the name of Blaine (Jay Walker) both his coat and scarf on a cold winter's day, the two gradually come to form a deep friendship upon Josh's repeated visits, in spite of the two clearly being of differing backgrounds, customs and language. Together however, they create a refuge from the outside world and in particular on the night that Josh in a bitter exchange of words with his father, opts to mirror his mothers' departure. Yet the reality of life has a way of forcing itself upon you, whether you want it to, or not.
Well-played throughout by the Botha and Walker boys, who wonderfully express their emotions in the near wordless interplay between them, this short film frankly has a lot going for it thanks to Balduzzi's distinct visual style of framing the story, even if I dare say that the cinematic tempo of the piece could be all too adagio for some; that is before the pace quickens come the dramatic conclusion. That many a romantic may well have preferred the ending to have been a few scenes earlier, kind of goes without saying. But that said, this nevertheless remains a wondrous ode to compassion for your fellow man and how that compassion is so often returned. Delightful.
