a short film by Daniel Ribeiro.

2010 | 17 mins | Brazil.

when love is blind to the calling of your heart.

Dave says:

Known as the award-winning short film upon which the feature The Way He Looks is based upon, this adorable work from writer and director Daniel Ribeiro is all but a variation on the coming-of-age theme, as fifteen-year-old blind teenager Leo (Ghilherme Lobo) finds himself having to deal with the emotional ups 'n' downs of his best friend Giovana (Tess Amorim) for the new student in class, whilst equally coming to terms with his own feelings for the boy and soon to be close friend and perhaps more, Gabriel (Fabio Audi).

For here we find writer and director Daniel Ribeiro delighting in injecting new life into the tried 'n' tested teenage crush scenario by telling the story refreshingly from a blind angle. Indeed, this cinematic gem beautifully showcases that when it comes to falling in love, love is blind to the calling of your heart. No surprise then, this that sweet 'n' tender short ended up the recipient of numerous film festival awards, let alone having been picked up by the government as part of a schools presentation on sexual diversity, only to find itself 'too hot to handle' in one state. Whilst that makes for a sad reflection on a part of Brazilian society, this short film, like the feature, remains simply heart-warming. Need more be said?
