›› According to Mateo - Según Mateo ‹‹

a short film by Osama Chami and Enrique Gimeno.

2017 | 19 mins | Spain.

an uncomfortable work on emotional and physical hurt.

Dave says:

Some films defy explanation and this is certainly one of them, given you're not really sure where it's going, that is until you realize that it's heading into some pretty dark places.

It begins with Mateo (Enrique Gimeno) and his boyfriend Marc (Michaël Assié) arriving back at their flat, alongside date for the night Luke (Joe Busk) for a threesome. Yet shortly after getting down to sexual basics, Mateo opts to leave the two to get-it-on without him. Heading out into the night, he bumps into Jon (Manuel Castillo); the local drug dealer who was on his way to deliver the goods to them. Instead Jon, who when not dealing drugs is a keen entomologist, finds himself unable to shake off Mateo, as the two get to know each other in ways that turn decidedly dark.

Co-written and co-directed by Osama Chami and star of the show Enrique Gimeno, frankly, there's a lot going for this short, being well-played throughout, with Gimeno clearly giving his all to his character and in more ways, than one. Yet and for all of its positives, it leaves certain questions unanswered and in particular the events that led up to the broken mirror opening sequence. The result is a work that makes for uncomfortable and at times painful viewing, as the narrative focuses on issues that culminate in the hurt one man feels; both emotionally and physically.
