Written and directed by Camille Melvil and Fabien Cavacas, this wonderfully crafted short film tells the story of Théo (Pierre Prieur), a seventeen-year-old teenager convinced that he's the sole gay in the village, given only his football mad brother Lucas (Maxime Taffanel) knows of his true sexuality, a fact well hidden from everyone and in particular from his mother and father. Seeking the company of other men, he surfs online in an effort to find himself a man for the night, much to the annoyance of his over-protective brother, already ill-at-ease with Théo's seemingly growing friendship with teammate Nathan (Théo Pittaluga) who may or may not be gay himself. But with Nathan happy to flirt with Théo, yet reluctant to go that one stage further, it's to the arms of a stranger that Théo turns to with alarming consequences.
In short and in as much as this makes for a cautionary tale on the dangers of the anonymous online hook-up, at heart this is a telling tale of brotherly love. To that end, Prieur is every inch the sweet and innocent youth of the piece, all to naïve to the ways of the world, craving for his first kiss, only for that first touch to be not the kind he was longing for. Yet it's Taffanel who here steals the show, wonderfully conveying his acceptance of his younger brother's sexuality, whilst in reality still trying to come to terms with it.
Playing like a feature, this wondrous short has a lot going for it, including the fine cinematography by Denis Gaubert. And whilst the sexual encounter itself is open to conjecture as to what actually took place, it's the close bond between the two siblings that shines throughout this work; two brothers of differing sexuality who are there for each other when it counts. Frankly, need more be said?
