a short film by Ron Jäger.

2018 | 20 mins | Germany.

a heartfelt work on to thy ownself, being true.

Dave says:

This earnest short from writer and director Ron Jäger tells the story of Theo (Julian Mannebach); a talented artist whose hopes and dreams for his future have come crashing down around him by way of the brutal fists of Fabian (Marius Rohmann); an angry youth vexed by way of Theo's friendship with classmate Linus (Lennart Hillmann) over that of his girlfriend. Yet it is obvious to everyone, apart from seemingly those here, that Linus and Theo only have eyes for each other. Refusing to strike Theo in the school changing rooms and yet equally with issues of his own, Linus is unable to give Theo the support he craves for. Perhaps then it's no surprise that Theo is alarmingly on the brink of suicide, that is until a Good Samaritan comes calling in the form of the 'is he crazy or not' P.E teacher.

In short and as interesting as the relationship between Theo and his boyfriend is, this is a work that poignantly turns the narrative on its head to focus instead on the developing friendship between Theo and Coach Krüger as touchingly played by Andreas Klinger, in his portrayal of a man who inspires Theo to be himself, only for his pearls of wisdom to mask his inner pain and turmoil.

Well-played by the protagonists, this makes for a short film that shines the spotlight on two people who at first glance appear to have nothing in common, only to develop a friendship that could be seen as analogous to that of father and son. All of which makes for a heartfelt work on to thy ownself, being true and of how support can come from the most unlikely of individuals. Say no more.
