›› I Am Syd Stone ‹‹

a short film by Denis Theriault.

2014 | 11 mins | Canada.

a contemplative work on the life and love that could have been.

starring: Gharrett Patrick Paon as Syd Stone and Michael Gaty as Brent.

Official Synopsis:

When a much-desired Hollywood heartthrob returns back to his home town for a reunion of sorts, he expects to rekindle an old closeted relationship. But soon he learns that things aren't as they seem and secrets always catch up in the end.

Dave says:

Essentially a two-man play, this reflective short makes fine use of the all too familiar closeted A-lister scenario as a backdrop to a contemplative work, as we encounter the mixed emotions of a Hollywood star whose hometown reunion is but a guise to spend time with the man he left for fame and fortune, only to discover that things for both of them, have moved on.

In short, here we find writer and director Denis Theriault deliver a bittersweet piece, one that is all about having to live with the consequences of the decisions we make in life and in particular the regrets of such, when pondering a life and love that could have been. And for Syd the reality of his situation has finally hit home. For having made it big in the film world, he finds himself alone in his hotel room, with no one to share his success - his very life with, prompting him to question if the sacrifice has really been worth it?

Well played by both Gharrett Patrick Paon of Deep End fame and Michael Gaty as the lover Stone left behind, even if they're a bit too physically alike in the roles for my liking, this short nevertheless achingly juxtaposes sadness with joy, as it strikingly illustrates the sexual façade of The Hollywood Closet, one that finds many an actor to this day opting to act out a public persona, that is but a lie. Or to put it another way and to echo the words poignantly said in this short: "you know, people don't really give a shit anymore; at least not like they used to". Only it would appear that Hollywood still does. Or does it? Indeed, are we too afraid to test if it truly still does?
