a newborn child heralds an accomplished but hardly gay short
First Breath by Jimmy Georgiades Written by Eric Lane, this uplifting short charts the discovery of a baby in a bin-liner by a Stateside bin collector and his rush for help, all of which lead him to the nearest house and an encounter with a student about to leave for her High School Prom. Heading to a nearby hospital instead and thereafter staying for a while to ensure the child is taken care of, it is the growing friendship that develops between the two strangers that comes to form the linchpin of this work.

Highly emotional - undoubtedly and yet and as accomplished a short as this is, one with a heartrending theme and no more so than the abandonment of a newborn child, this is hardly a gay work. Indeed the sole homosexual link is a passing reference to a gay Prom invitation to which the man declined. In short and in spite of the many fine merits of this piece, in the end this is gay Jim, only not as us boys know it!
