the bittersweet bond between a mother and her son.

Dave says:

This poignant piece from writer and director Valentina Chamorro of The Beast fame tells the story of the bittersweet bond between a mother and her son.

For Eva (Monica Albornoz) is that mother, having recently returned to Sweden from her country of birth to view official paperwork from her past and whilst there, visit her now grown-up son David (Gabriel Nal). Only their relationship is far from the congenial kind, filled with moments of tense silence, it's one that's further complicated by her son being deaf and her sign language being more than a little rusty. Thankfully David's boyfriend Simon (Robert Ingvarsson) is on hand to translate when the need arises, only for some things in life to not need words to express their meaning.

In many ways, this is a work in which the homosexual aspect of the story takes second place to the theme of a mother trying to re-connect with her son, only for her son to have seemingly never forgiven her for returning to her homeland and in the process, not being there for him when it mattered. Yet what should really matter is the present and here the narrative wonderfully showcases the love of a mother who without a homophobic bone in her body, is more than willing to embrace her son's boyfriend, happy in the knowledge that her son has found companionship and love. The result is a touching tale about relationships, one that's beautifully played by all parties and in particular by Albornoz who shines in the role of a mother reaching out to her son, only to find such affection unrequited. And here you cannot help but feel for her and the sorry situation of a son who whilst deaf, is blind to a mother desperately trying to make amends.
