a short film by Nathalie Álvarez Mesén.

2015 | 11 mins | Sweden.

a beautifully crafted sweet, yet telling tale on sexual identity.

Dave says:

This sweet, yet telling tale from writer and director Nathalie Álvarez Mesén is not so much a case of "What the Butler Saw" but more that of - what the younger brother saw?

For seven-year-old Filip (Josef Waldfogel) has a close bond with his older brother Sebastian (August Segerholm) to the degree that the two are more like best friends, rather than siblings; playing football together, that is when not watching films, alongside Sebastian's best friend (Simon Reithner). Only what's Filip to think of his older brother when he accidentally sees him sharing a series of tender kisses with his close friend, of the boyfriend variety?

Beautifully played through the eyes of a child, this is a work in which the innocence of youth meets the reality of life, as issues of sexual identity and the ugly face of homophobia take centre stage. Waldfogel is utterly charming in the role of a young boy who seemingly has no interest in the opposite sex; rather delighting in being in the company of older boys. That the sexual path that he's to take in life may already have been set, is part of the beauty of this simple, but beautifully crafted work. Say no more.
