a short film by Leandro Goddinho.

2019 | 15 mins | Brazil.

a powerful take on coming out in the face of presidential prejudice.

Dave says:

Opening with a reality check reminder of the election victory of Jair Messias Bolsonaro as the 38th president of Brazil, namely a man who is a self-declared homophobe, proudly stating that he would rather have a dead son, than a gay one; this gloriously gay-to-the-core work from writer and director Leandro Goddinho is a wondrous testament to the beauty of same-sex love in the face of such outright prejudice.

For here cue the lives of teen country music stars Cauê (Fernando Siqueira) and Julian (Marcos Oliveira); a pair of likeable young lads who are officially straight to the world and in particular to their adoring fans, having just won the Best Country Duo award, only to have failed to appear to accept it when Cauê suffered a panic attack on the night itself. Taking refuge in his hotel room with Julian rushing to his rescue, the two swap formal attire for lion fashioned onesies, along the way drinking and playing video games, to going for a midnight swim in the deserted hotel pool, a dip that soon leads to some tender man-on-man lip-service and more. But with their manager knocking on their hotel room door determined to show them who's boss, the two are left to decide between forever staying in the closet or outing themselves with pride - before it's too late!

Achingly juxtaposing the fanaticism, bigotry and violence of Bolsonaro's term in office with out 'n' proud sexual openness, this captivating short film has a lot going it, being well-played throughout thanks to the Siqueira / Oliveira pairing establishing a delightful camaraderie between their characters in such a short space of time. Yet here it's the narrative that's the real star of the piece, as it focuses on the story of two young men who in the face of hysterical homophobia opt to show their love to the world, whatever the consequences be on their career, if not on their very lives.

That a number of directors, Goddinho clearly amongst them, have the courage to produce such openly gay works in a country that whilst having the most advanced LGBT rights in Latin America, still remains ingrained with deep-rooted homophobia makes for a powerful take on coming out in the face of presidential prejudice. Frankly, need more be said?
